Southdown was completely rebuilt for the 2005 season in order to make the baseboards lighter and more rigid (the original was 25 years old!). The track was renewed at the same time and the scenery completely refreshed, new features being mixed with the old. Below are some shots taken during the reconstruction, but click here to see more of the completed layout.

Although almost the same size, the squared corners make the layout look much larger. The engine shed is placed at an angle to the running lines and the public, so you can see inside more easily.Bob Petch, Master of the (back)Boards, titilates the newly located boards.More sweeping curves give greater area for scenery. Here is a level crossing and roadway being added by the river.

A test train, the widest, longest and highest, passes the new logging camp. The engine shed is now set at an angle to the running lines, so the detailed interior can be seen.Detail of the new bridge over the river.Sweeping curves over the river replace the corners of old...The approach the the tunnel, from the footplate of a Consolidation.Full width platforms feature, very clean today!

(Roll over the pictures for a description of what's going on).
