16mm Narrow Gauge Modellers, Hampshire Area Group.

This page contains details of contacts and local events in the 16mmngm calendar for the Hampshire area. It is part of the Castagnola South Light Railway website, and includes details of the Southdown Railway Company portable layout. Please use the buttons on the left to move to other areas of the site,

Hampshire Group.

Informal meetings are held on the second Friday of each month - the venue now being used by the club is at Portchester, Seaway Grove : it is the separate building right at the end of the lane. The postcode is PO16 9HN and there will be meetings from about 20:00hrs onwards. There is a multi-gauge test track in a separate hut, upon which three steam locos and one electric were tested in February. A donation of £1.50 is requested to cover coffee/tea and biscuits each visit. A call to one of us can explain further if required or your sat-nav is confused!

Usually there are experienced folk about to help with any difficulties and boiler testing can be carried out by myself - please make contact with a little notice before arriving to ensure it is all ready, or we can arrange another time here in Waterlooville.  It will probably be best to contact either myself or William prior to attending to ensure what time the doors will be open, or if you just want more info. Use the email address link at the foot of this page if needed.

Dave Shotter has been resurrecting a 32mm exhibition line named "Crumblyn", and is using the premises for this task. Volunteers no doubt will be required to assist. The line is an industrial tramway type with restricted clearances and tight curves, but has been proved with a Roundhouse Silver Lady.

As you can see from the pictures here, rails are being replaced, but there was still an awful lot to do - the original track was Mamod and had suffered during storage.

Crumblyn January 2008. The rail replacement forges ahead, the new brass variant with wooden sleepers is being handbuilt but stands out very significantly. Dave and Mike investigate a problem with one of the handmade points.

Dave insists he can fix it simply, Mike points, at the point. The pointwork is to be controlled by local levers, no signal box or groundframe at Crumblyn.....

Crumblyn work continues apace through 2009. For the first time, we've been able to erect the whole layout in the clubhouse, showing the progress and perhaps more importantly, what is left to do!

Click on each of the pictures below to get an idea of the project. The trackwork is all but complete, relaid in new brass rail and replacing the damaged Mamod cast units. The pointwork is all handbuilt by Dave.

The station appears to have won an award..........!

Crumblyn has now been successfully displayed at a handful of shows in the latter part of 2009, and bookings are in place for 2010.

WESTERN FRINGE (or The Outer Rim): Presently there are ad-hoc meetings taking place in the west of the region (Lyndhurst/Totton) which avoids the extensive travel for those partakers. Please contact William or me on the emails below for more details. The meetings are on Friday eves.

NORTHERN ADVANCES A new outdoor running track and group has launched recently, see www.16mmnhg.webs.com. The group is based near Andover in the north of the region.

Contact : William Bickers-Jones via email on hampshire.group@16mm.org.uk or myself on steam@cslr.co.uk.

William can put you in touch with other local members, or let you know of any local garden running sessions, which are usually more frequent in the summer months.

This area has a mixture of 32mm and 45mm gauge railways, featuring stock and models from railways of Britain, Europe, Africa and the Americas. The Hampshire group is also host to the Southdown portable layout.
